Milo’s Junkyard is a game inspired by Marijenburg’s (Charlie de Saint Jores) childhood favorite movie “Stand by me”, directed by Rob Reiner. And more specifically the scene at the junkyard at the beginning of their adventure. Stand by me is an adaptation of the short story “The body” by Stephen King.
Lead Unity 3D programmer
Beginnings
I started working on Milo’s Junkyard as a side project with Charlie, who was the Game Designer and main artist as well as Bill’s Game Designer.
Charlie had prototyped the game in Unity and I joined him to help him with the programming side of things.
Helping Charlie
Charlie asked me to help him with implementing some features that he felt were too complex for him to handle alone. I was happy to help and we started working together on the project.
The first feature I implemented was the visual help that predicts the trajectory of the stone when thrown.

Refactoring
The codebase was simple and easy to understand, but it needed some optimizations to run smoothly on mobile devices and more specifically on moble web browsers.
Conclusion
I had a lot of fun working on Milo’s Junkyard and it was a great opportunity to work with Charlie again. The game is a great example of how a simple idea can be turned into a fun and engaging game.
